Event Description

The Levitt Center invites you to student centered Community Conversation on Indigenous Studies.  Space is limited!  Please Register for dinner here.

For the past two years, Hamilton College has been working to establish an American Indian and Indigenous Studies (AIIS) program. That effort was bolstered by a recent $750,000 grant from the Mellon Foundation to support both the academic program and a partnership with the Oneida Nation. This program recognizes the College’s roots in the Hamilton-Oneida Academy – a school established to educate both Oneida and settler children – before the institution was transformed into Hamilton College. As we move forward with the AIIS program, how should we honor and address that history? How should the College approach its relationship to the Oneida Nation? How should we teach the history of the College within the AIIS program and what role should this program play in the decolonization of the broader curriculum? How can the new AIIS program both meet the needs of Hamilton students and rebuild the historic partnership between the College and the Oneida Nation? Join us for a conversation with Professor Brianna Burke, Visiting Associate Professor in Environmental Studies, Faculty Fellow in Native and Indigenous Studies, and co-developer of the proposed AIIS program. Dinner from Minar will be provided!

The Levitt Center will follow up with a confirmation once you have registered.

This is a Crossroads Event. Community Conversations are made possible by the The Alan McCullough, Jr. Fund for Applied Philosophy
