On Monday, Feb. 5, LinkedIn appointed Hamilton alumnus and former Advent Software Inc. executive Dan Nye '88 to the position of chief executive officer. Nye will succeed LinkedIn’s founder and CEO Reid Hoffman, who will remain chairman and president of products. Hoffman is confident that Nye is among “the best organizational builders and leaders there is” and is very “excited to work with Dan, both because he is an amazing executive and because (they) share the vision that LinkedIn will be essential for every professional in the world.” Under Nye’s leadership, LinkedIn intends to double its staff by December.

Professor of Mathematics Robert Kantrowitz and Mary B. O'Neill, academic support coordinator and director of the Quantitative Literacy Center were invited panelists for the discussion “Current Practices in Quantitative Literacy: An Interdisciplinary Perspective” at the national joint meetings of The American Mathematical Society and The Mathematical Association of America in New Orleans last month.

An installation titled “Breath,” created by Assistant Professor of Art Rebecca Murtaugh, is currently featured at the Athens Institute of Contemporary Art in Athens, Georgia. It is part of an exhibition titled “Transience: The Paradox of Being” that offers the perspectives of 16 artists whose work inspires contemplation of the universal issue of transience. The show was curated by Katy Logue Thompson and Chris MacKay.

Art history professor Stephen J. Goldberg presented a lecture titled "Memory, Authenticity, and Identity in Contemporary Chinese Art," as part of the Spring 2007 Art and Art History Lecture Series at Colgate University on Jan. 31.

The Internal Revenue Service has issued to Hamilton College a special ruling that allows the college to invest charitable remainder trusts with its endowment. These charitable gift vehicles will benefit from increased diversification and growth potential.

Hamilton College has announced the single largest gift in its history, $10 million from Wendy and Keith Wellin for a three-building arts complex.

Artist and Kirkland College alumna Mei-ling Hom '73 will return to the Hamilton College campus to give a lecture on Wednesday, Jan. 31.  She will speak at 4:15 p.m. in the Red Pit of the Kirner-Johnson Building. Her lecture is free and open to the public.

Stephen Goldberg conducted a day-long workshop for K-12 teachers titled “Incorporating Asian Art into the Public School Classroom.” The workshop was hosted by Belmont University in Nashville in conjunction with the 2007 annual meeting of the Southeast Conference of the Association of Asian Studies on January 13.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Government Nicholas Tampio published an article on “Rawls and the Kantian Ethos” in the January issue of Polity. The article shows how Rawls transforms Kant’s philosophy in order to revitalize the Enlightenment. The article is part of his book manuscript on Kant’s legacy in contemporary political theory.
