Alf Evers, who died last Wednesday at age 99, was the town historian of Woostock, N.Y., and the author of several exhaustive works of local history,including "The Catskills: From Wilderness to Woodstock."    A charismatic figure, Alf often spoke before local groups regarding the need to limit development in the Catskills, Evers seems to have been preserved into a lucid old age by his dedication to his work. In the days before his death, he put the finishing touches on his final book, "Kingstonon-Hudson: An American Historical City," another massive production, which he wrote with the secretarial assistance of Ed Sanders, a poet and friend. It is scheduled to bepublished this spring.  "He was singing when he passed," Mr. Sanders said. "Bemusement, that's how he lived so long. The divine comedy passed over his eyes."

The Alumni Council met on the Hill during a glorious Fallcoming Weekend. Temperatures soared into the low 80’s. A record 59 council members made the trip to the Hill. Weekend council activity included:   Fallcoming Photo GalleryCelebration of Service dinner on Friday evening: The Alumni Council presented our Volunteer of the Year award to Dick Couper '44 for his years of dedicated service to the College. Three College Key Awards were presented to Ed Deci '64, John Villios '73 and Alan Silverman '76. Congratulations and thank you! Council Business - Council Expansion: The Executive Committee of the Alumni Council agreed to expand Alumni Council Membership to include Class Agents, as part of the Class Leadership Committee, and GOLD group chairs, as part of the Regional Affairs Committee. The Council approved these recommendations noting that expansion provides "...means of better serving both the College and our alumni constituency ... creates a basis for a stronger, deeper, more far-reaching Alumni Council." Multicultural Alumni - Students Mentoring Kick-off Event: A weekend highlight included the inaugural mentoring event sponsored by the Multicultural Alumni Relations Committee (MARC). Over 80 people attended including more than 20 alumni mentors, over 50 students and members of the College community at large. Kudos are extended to MARC chair Torrence Moore '92 and mentoring committee chair Laura Hsieh '93 and the MARC committee members who contributed to this program inauguration. Alumni Council Welcomes new Alumni Association (AA) Regional Presidents: The Council extended their welcome to new AA presidents who include: Bruce Gaylord '70 and Alexandra Stevens '95 in Fairfield County; Sara Shapiro Haberson '97 and Justin Haberson '96 in Philadelphia along with Lynne Salkin '00 the Philadelphia GOLD chair; Liz Holland '87 in Chicago; Dan Murdock in Westchester County and Bill Gaden '84 (as co-president with Susan Bacot '88) in New York City. AA presidents offer alumni their leadership and energy to help foster educational and social events in the association areas where we live and work. 2003 Hamilton Alums, Ali Cherry, Sarah Karpinski and Andrew Magoun have reached the half way mark training as "Team Hamilton" for the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington,D.C. They are training under the guidance of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to help raise awareness and fund research to find a cure for these horrible diseases. 

Fallcoming 2004, held on the Hill Oct. 8-10, is a traditional time for Hamilton alumni to reconnect with classmates and friends in our spectacularly beautiful autumn campus environment. Weekend events are rich and numerous. In addition to social events, athletic events are held, the Emerson Gallery exhibit is showcased, the Board of Trustees and the Alumni Council meet and world-class jazz is performed. This year, an athletics reunion will also occur on Saturday concluding with a keynote lecture by renowned sport commentator and author Frank Deford. Join us.

The Nominations Committee of the Alumni Council invites members of the on-campus community, alumni, and others to provide the Committee with recommendations for the annual Hamilton College Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award. In October, the Alumni Council will act on the nomination put forward by the Committee.  The formal award presentation will take place at Hamilton during the Spring 2005 meetings of the Alumni Council.

Pig Brooch, Inc. is an emergent New York City theatre company composed entirely of former Hamilton College students (Aurelia Fisher '03, Aaron Wilton '03, and Justin Tyler '01). Their first show, Happy Mundanes, will be part of the New York International Fringe Festival this year, August 13-29.  The inspiration for Happy Mundanes came from a year of travel and study on a Bristol Fellowship from Hamilton College.

The Hamilton College Alumni Office is pleased to introduce you to our Alumni Travel program. Hamilton College, in concert with Bates, Bowdoin and Colby colleges, will offer international Alumni Travel opportunities to Hamilton alumni, parents and friends of the College in 2005: Costa Rica: January / SOLD OUT Chianti in a Tuscan Villa: April Provence - Aix-en-Provence: June China, Tibet & the Yangtze River: October 20 - November 7 All travel events will have strong educational elements to complement the professionally managed tours. A fifth summer kayaking trip north of Boothbay, Maine is also planned.
