Assistant Professor of Woman's Studies Vivyan Adair wrote an article for the Harvard Educational Review, "Poverty and the (Broken) Promise of Higher Education" (Summer 2001 issue). Adair, who is also co-director of the ACCESS project at Hamilton, argues that educators must recognize the importance of making higher education available to low-income single mothers.

Hamilton Men's and Women's Swimming Coach Dave Thompson provides the Speedo "Tip of the Week" on the U.S. Swimming Team Web site. Thompson points out that swimmers in northern climates aren't exposed to enough sunlight, so they should ensure they're getting sufficient Vitamin D.

Professor of Government Cheng Li wrote an article, "From Red to Green?," about the Chinese Communist party that appears on Project Syndicate Web site. Project Syndicate is an international association of quality newspapers devoted to the objective of bringing distinguished voices from across the world to informed national audiences so as to create a global forum for the broadening of debate and exchange of ideas.

Hamilton College was cited in a New York Times article (7/25/01) as an example of "small but respected colleges." The Times article concerned a new college, Soka University of America, the first new private liberal arts college to be built in California in 25 years. The article notes "Soka University has a grand dream: to join the ranks of venerable institutions like Pomona, Haverford, Hamilton, and other small but respected colleges."

Joseph B. Baudo '97 and Timothy DiGiulio '98 coached the Western team to the Scholastic Ice Hockey gold medal in the Empire State Games. Hamilton College was among the event venues, hosting diving, field hockey and volleyball.

Assistant Professor of Theatre & Dance Mark Cryer is appearing in the Saratoga Springs Shakespeare Festival production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" by William Shakespeare. David Paris, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty, announced the appointment of Andrea Habbel as Administrative Assistant to the VPAA/Dean of Faculty. Habbel received her MPA from Syracuse University in 1997 and has been Assistant Director of Institutional Research at Hamilton for the past four years. In her new position she will be responsible for tracking and analyzing information on personnel and budgets, as well as general office management. She will formally begin her work in the VPAA/Dean's office on August 27.

Naomi Guttman, assistant professor of English at Hamilton College, has been awarded a New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) 2001 Fellowship. She was among 161 artists chosen from more than 3,200 applicants by a peer panel review process.

Hamilton College students, faculty, alumni and employees competed in the running of the 24th annual Boilermaker Road Race in Utica on Sunday, July 8.

Dick Patrick, a 1973 graduate of Hamilton College, and a track and field writer for USA Today, was honored by the National Distance Running Hall of Fame with the George Sheehan Media Award on July 7. Patrick ran in the 15K Boilermaker Road race on July 8.
