Co-ed a cappella group Duelly Noted is preparing for its sixth annual concert tour during Hamilton’s winter break. The four-day tour will include performances in Connecticut, New Jersey and New York.

Neil deGrasse Tyson, an American astrophysicist and director of the Hayden Planetarium, will appear as the next guest and the first scientist in the Hamilton College Sacerdote Great Names Series on Tuesday, April 12, at 7 p.m., in the Margaret Bundy Scott Field House.  He will give an interactive presentation which will followed by a question and answer period. The event will be free and open to the public.

In the coming weeks Hamilton’s Communications Department will review the college news that received the most interest from national and local media during 2015. Here’s a look back at the stories that garnered the greatest attention on Hamilton’s news site each month this year, based on the number of views.

Hamilton juniors Angel Pichardo and Hannah Strong have been awarded Gilman International Scholarship Program awards for undergraduate study abroad in the spring 2016 semester. Pichardo plans to study in the biomedicine program at the Danish Institute for Study Abroad (DIS) in Copenhagen, Denmark, and Strong will enroll at the University of Capetown, South Africa, in the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) arts and sciences program.

Eleven Hamilton students have received creativity grants from the Steven Daniel Smallen Memorial Fund. The 2015 recipients are Saige Devlin ’18, Max Freedman ’17, Corinne Hom ’16, Chris Labora ’16, Asad Javed ’16, Lily Johnston ’16, Hristina Mangelova ’16, Laura Rivera ’16, John Rufo ’16, Charlotte Simons ’16 and Zoe Tessler ’16.

Eight Hamilton students have been selected to receive the Class of 1979 Student Travel Award. The award, established by the alumni of Hamilton’s Class of 1979, offers financial assistance to Hamilton students who wish to pursue extensive research projects in different parts of the world.

Hamilton’s Athletics Department celebrated the holiday season with generous giving to the less fortunate. The department participated in COOP’s Holiday Gift Drive and supported individuals from the Johnson Park Center and a family through the Department of Social Services.

The Hamilton Association for Volunteering, Outreach and Charity (HAVOC) recently donated $1,026. to the Utica Public Library for its backpack exchange program.  The early literacy program offers themed activity backpacks for infants to children age 5.  Each backpack includes books, musical CDs, activities list and educational toys. These are borrowed by parents and caregivers to expand the library experience to the home.

Although Kwanzaa is still a few weeks away, Hamilton’s Black and Latino Student Union (BLSU) invited 50 guests, including students and faculty, to celebrate the spirit of Kwanzaa and each other as the academic semester comes to a close. The celebration honors African heritage in African-American culture, and is observed from December 26 to January 1, culminating in a feast and gift-giving.

The annual Men's Hockey Date auction on Dec. 2, sponsored by Student Assembly’s Social Traditions committee, was a huge success, raising $708 for the Kelberman Center.  The Center, founded by cardiologist Dr. Michael Kelberman ’80, is a regional center for excellence for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder.  The organization provides services to more than 1000 children and adults throughout Central New York and employs more than 175 full and part-time staff.
