Hamilton College’s Class & Charter Day celebration, an annual convocation recognizing student and faculty excellence during the preceding academic year, will take place on Monday, May 11, at 4:15 p.m., in Wellin Hall.

Three sophomores inspired by Hamilton’s annual Cram & Scram reused furniture and goods sale have taken clothing shopping on campus to a new level with their pop-up Thrift Shop, open today outside Sadove Student Center. Mary Langworthy, Audrey Love and Sara Purinton are operating a recycled clothing shop with items donated and now purchased by students, faculty and staff. In just three hours the trio has taken in more than $300 which will be turned over to benefit the Nepal relief efforts through an organization that their classmate Nepal native Sharif Shrestha started.

Students, faculty and members of the Hamilton community came out in force for a candelight vigil to remember victims of the April 25 earthquake in Nepal and raise awareness of fundraising efforts on campus and globally. The vigil was organized by the International Students Association. Today (April 30) the Asian Cultural Society is holding a brainstorming session “What Can we do for Nepal,” at 5 p.m. on the Sadove Sunporch.

Pioneering civil rights attorney Mary Bonauto ’83 appeared before the U.S. Supreme Court on April 28 to argue Obergefell v. Hodges, a case that could determine whether same-sex marriage is a constitutional right. Obergefell combines four challenges to same-sex marriage bans, from Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio and Michigan.

Elizabeth “Edie” Wilson ’15 has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Thailand. Wilson completed her Hamilton coursework as an anthropology major in December and will graduate in May. She is currently a research assistant at ICF International in Washington, D.C., evaluating the effectiveness of government grants related to education.

This year’s speaker is Alumni Association president John Hadity ’83, a film financing expert and executive vice president for EP Financial Solutions. His talk is titled “The Underrated Element of Surprise.”

Caroline Rudd ’16 has been awarded a national Beinecke Scholarship. Each Beinecke scholar receives $4,000 immediately prior to entering graduate school and an additional $30,000 while attending graduate school. In the 2015 competition 85 students were nominated and 20 awards were given.

Hamilton welcomes accepted students for its annual Admission Open house on Monday, April 20. Students accepted for the Class of 2019 along with their families will be on campus to experience “a day in the life” on the Hill.

Hamilton’s Mock Trial team is off to Cincinnati to compete in the American Mock Trial Association's annual national tournament April 17-19. The team includes co-captains Amber Groves ’15 and Maggie McGuire ’15, Ian Carradine ’15, Hunter Green ’16, Andrew Fischer ’17, Caroline Reppert ’17, Sam Weckenman ’17, Ryan Bloom ‘18, and Conor O’Shea ’18.
