Throughout his 20-year career with the New York Yankees, Derek Jeter had the reputation as a “gamer” – always the player who gave 110 percent and played harder than anyone else. The former Yankees captain and shortstop proved that label still holds when he slogged through snow, ice and a Nor’easter to keep his date at Hamilton College as a guest in the Sacerdote Great Names series on Dec. 10.

Six students have been selected to receive the Class of 1979 Student Travel Award. The award, established by the alumni of Hamilton’s Class of 1979, offers financial assistance to Hamilton students who wish to pursue extensive research projects in different parts of the world.

Hamilton’s English and Creative Writing Fall 2014 Reading Series presents events with  poets Sarah Harwell and Gary Leising on Thursday, Dec. 4.  Harwell will discuss MFA programs and getting published at a coffee hour at 4:10 p.m. at the Sadove Sun Porch.  Harwell and Leising will read from their work at 8 p.m. in Dwight Lounge, Bristol Campus Center, and a reception will follow. Both events are free and open to the public.

A College in Prison program at the Mohawk Correctional Facility in Rome, N.Y., initiated by Hamilton College Professor of English and Creative Writing Doran Larson, and sponsored by Mohawk Valley Community College (MVCC), has been honored with the James C. Hall Exemplary Credit Program Award by the Continuing Education Association of New York (CEANY).

Rachel Sobel ’15, a biochemistry and women’s studies double major, has been selected for the second consecutive year to attend the United Nations Climate Change Convention. She is one of eight students sponsored by the American Chemical Society (ACS) to attend the talks, being held this year in Lima, Peru, from Dec. 1-12.

This week marks the National Collegiate Emergency Services Foundation’s National Collegiate EMS week, during which Hamilton recognizes the efforts of its student EMTs. Whenever there is a medical emergency on the Hamilton College campus, student EMTs are always the first-responders.  The Hamilton College Emergency Medical Services (HCEMS) team comprises 24 students from varied backgrounds and interests.  We salute them and thank them for their service.

The Levitt Center hosted its second StartupExperience, an intensive two-day workshop for students interested in social and commercial entrepreneurship on Nov. 8 and 9.  Participants worked in teams to learn about problem identification, technology trends, design thinking, business model innovation, customer development and pitching, and in the process gained the confidence to create a viable start-up.

Filmmaker and author Mick Conefrey will present his BBC documentary The Race for Everest and lead a discussion following the screening on Thursday, Nov. 13, at 7:30 p.m., in the Taylor Science Center’s Kennedy Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

Members of the women’s tennis team volunteered at the Rome Humane Society on Oct. 25 and Nov. 5. Team members dried scoopers, folded towels, brushed and pet cats, and walked dogs.  Women’ s tennis is one of many Hamilton varsity sports that engage in community service activities. The men's cross country team recently volunteered at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore secondhand shop, and the women's soccer team participates each year in the Great American Heart Run and Walk.

Assistant Professor of Anthropology Nathan Goodale’s “Archaeology of Hamilton’s Founding” (Arch 110) class is excavating the property at 60 College Hill Road, looking for evidence that would link the structure back to its possible construction date of 1793 (per the plaque above the door). Investigations of several architectural features are indicative of the 18th century, making this possibly the oldest structure still on its original foundation on campus.
