Rachel Sobel ’15, a biochemistry and women’s studies double major, has been selected for the second consecutive year to attend the United Nations Climate Change Convention. She is one of eight students sponsored by the American Chemical Society (ACS) to attend the talks, being held this year in Lima, Peru, from Dec. 1-12.

This week marks the National Collegiate Emergency Services Foundation’s National Collegiate EMS week, during which Hamilton recognizes the efforts of its student EMTs. Whenever there is a medical emergency on the Hamilton College campus, student EMTs are always the first-responders.  The Hamilton College Emergency Medical Services (HCEMS) team comprises 24 students from varied backgrounds and interests.  We salute them and thank them for their service.

The Levitt Center hosted its second StartupExperience, an intensive two-day workshop for students interested in social and commercial entrepreneurship on Nov. 8 and 9.  Participants worked in teams to learn about problem identification, technology trends, design thinking, business model innovation, customer development and pitching, and in the process gained the confidence to create a viable start-up.

Filmmaker and author Mick Conefrey will present his BBC documentary The Race for Everest and lead a discussion following the screening on Thursday, Nov. 13, at 7:30 p.m., in the Taylor Science Center’s Kennedy Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

Members of the women’s tennis team volunteered at the Rome Humane Society on Oct. 25 and Nov. 5. Team members dried scoopers, folded towels, brushed and pet cats, and walked dogs.  Women’ s tennis is one of many Hamilton varsity sports that engage in community service activities. The men's cross country team recently volunteered at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore secondhand shop, and the women's soccer team participates each year in the Great American Heart Run and Walk.

Assistant Professor of Anthropology Nathan Goodale’s “Archaeology of Hamilton’s Founding” (Arch 110) class is excavating the property at 60 College Hill Road, looking for evidence that would link the structure back to its possible construction date of 1793 (per the plaque above the door). Investigations of several architectural features are indicative of the 18th century, making this possibly the oldest structure still on its original foundation on campus. 

James Capreedy ’94, an assistant professor of classics at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, will give a lecture titled “Geography, Digital Mapping and the Fall of Rome” on Wednesday, Nov. 5, at 4:10 p.m., in the Taylor Science Center, room 3024.

Frank Lentricchia, Utica College graduate and literary critic, novelist and film professor, will present two events at Hamilton as part of the English Department’s Fall 2014 Reading Series. Lentricchia will read from his most recent work, Dog Killer of Utica: An Eliot Conte Mystery, on Monday, Nov. 3, at 4:10 p.m., in Dwight Lounge, Bristol Campus Center. He will present a talk titled “Writing as an Italian-American?” on Tuesday, Nov. 4, at 7:30 p.m., in the Burke Library All Night Reading Room. Both events are free and open to the public.

Hamilton College Dean of Faculty Patrick Reynolds announced the promotion of three Hamilton faculty members to the rank of professor. Jennifer Borton, psychology; Sally Cockburn, mathematics; and Julio Videras, economics, were promoted effective Oct. 11.

Hamilton women’s ice hockey, men’s ice hockey and men’s basketball team members were among participants in this year’s AK5K run and walk on Oct.12 in New Hartford, N.Y.  Representing the Hamilton community were 56 students, three parents and a sibling who participated with 900 runners and walkers, with 200 volunteers and about 500 spectators cheering them on.
