Beginning this year, Hamilton College will become one of only a handful of schools to participate in the University of Rochester’s Early Assurance Program, which will give students the opportunity to gain conditional admission to its College of Medicine at the beginning of their junior year.

On Feb. 1 of next semester, the Wellin Museum of Art will showcase two very special exhibitions side-by-side: In Context: The Portrait in Contemporary Photographic Practice, and Refocusing the Lens: Pranlal Patel’s Photographs of Women at Work in Ahmedabad. What makes these exhibitions so special is that they will represent the culmination of two semester-long interdisciplinary courses that have been co-taught by Assistant Professor of Art Robert Knight and Associate Professor of History Lisa Trivedi.

Jamie J. Fader, author and assistant professor at the School of Criminal Justice at the University at Albany, spoke to members of the Hamilton community about her book, Falling Back: Incarceration and Transitions to Adulthood among Urban Youth (Rutgers University Press, 2013), as part of the Levitt Center's speaker series on Oct. 8.

Distinguished author and Professor James Oakes of the Graduate Center of the City University of New York was the featured speaker of a lecture sponsored jointly by the Hamilton College Dean of the Faculty and History Department on Oct. 3. Oakes gave attendees a sneak preview of his most recent book, The Scorpion’s Sting: Anti-Slavery and the Coming of the Civil War, which will be published in May of next year.

The Leadership Experience And Preparation (LEAP) program, developed through a partnership between Hamilton students, the Dean of Students Office and the Levitt Center, is a residentially based mentoring and leadership program that is being implemented for the first time this year. Its inaugural class of 59 first-year students will live together primarily in the Wertimer and Root residence halls, and work together in smaller groups under the leadership of upperclass student mentors.

Like so many other Hamilton students who take advantage of the academic freedom the open curriculum offers, recent graduate David Schwartz ’13 sort of accidentally fell into his major and academic passion: sociology.

Hamilton students enrolled in Steve Wu's Health Economics class, Alan Cafruny's International Political Economy class, and Herm Lehman's Intro. to Public Health classes were invited to meet and speak with Sacerdote Great Names speaker Dr. Bernard Kouchner in a small, informal group before the large public lecture held later in the evening.
