Over the course of Reunions ’11 Weekend, speakers at 30 Alumni College events informed the more than 1,000 returning alumni and guests on a wide variety of topics, ranging from urban redevelopment to food allergies to healthcare to sustainable investments. Here are brief reports on six of those sessions.

A memorial service for Professor of Biology Emeritus Eugene Putala will be held on Saturday, April 23, at noon, in the College Chapel. A reception will follow at the Science Center atrium.  

Professor of Biology Emeritus Gene Putala will give a Thursday afternoon talk about the rare sprengeri tulip, a self-seeding tulip which has graced our own Root Glen for many years. It remains a mystery how this rare species of tulip appeared at Hamilton, but Professor Putala has several possible theories. Although retired, Professor Putala lives in the area and serves on the Root Glen Advisory Committee. He will share stories about the Root family as well as educate gardners about the beautiful sprengeri which comes into full bloom just in time to welcome alumni back for Reunions!

"A Nature Walk in the Root Glen," an Alumni College led by Professor of Biology Ernest Williams, was far more than a nature lesson. Williams' fascinating hour-long tour touched on many areas of study including geology, history and math as well as biology. Reflective of the glen's frequent community usage, the Utica Tramp and Trail Club and a Kirkland Art Center painting class were also enjoying the Root Glen. Several members of those groups joined alumni for the informative tour.
