  • The Utica area is sometimes described as a food desert, or an area where healthy, fresh food is not immediately available. This lack of fresh food forces residents to turn to cheaper, less healthy options such as convenience store food. Stephanie Ingraham ’13 is an intern with Utica Urban Gardens at For the Good, Inc., an initiative that works to fight poverty and provide low-income individuals with fresh crops while preserving the environment.

  • Literary agencies help make the book-publishing process go as smoothly as possible. By mediating the interactions between publishers and authors, these agencies help bring the best possible writing to publishing houses while securing better deals for writers. Janine Barlow ’13 is spending the summer as an intern for the Jean V. Naggar Literary Agency (JVNLA) in New York City, gaining a new perspective on the publishing industry. Her internship is supported by the Vilsack Fund through the Career Center.

  • Capacity building offers a way of alleviating poverty while focusing on the natural assets of developing societies. Through capacity building non-governmental organizations can help build stronger communities. Amanda Nelson ’13 is spending the summer with the Foundation for Sustainable Development (FSD)  supporting the organization’s goal of building capacity in developing countries.  Her internship is supported by the Anderson Fund through the Career Center.

  • David Bell, senior associate director of the career center, was quoted in a July 28 Washington Post article focused on the important role played by funded internships in offering college students career-related summer job experience. Hamilton was included among the colleges that offer funding to support student interns in unpaid positions.

  • History can be learned from many different perspectives. Primary Source, a nonprofit organization that provides alternative ways of learning,  supplements traditional techniques with additional resources for teachers. Elizabeth “Lizzy” Buhl ’12 is helping to accomplish this goal with an internship there,  supported by the Couper Fund through the Career Center.

  • Sustainable, organic farming offers a fresh, local alternative to supermarket foods. However, some people might find it difficult to shop locally, and low-income individuals may have trouble affording farm shares and local food. Lauren Howe ’13 is working to correct both problems as an intern for Grow Food Northampton in Northampton, Mass.

  • A law degree can lead can lead to countless career paths, but regardless of a student’s goals, a district attorney’s office offers an exciting environment in which to learn about the legal field. Ephraim McDowell ’12, a sociology major with a minor in communication, is spending his summer with the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office in Canton, Mass., working with one of the assistant district attorneys.

  • Documentaries have a way of making history come alive, and well-made and innovative documentaries are especially engrossing and vivid. Over the summer Brett Banhazl ’12 will work in Brighton, Mass., with American Experience, an award-winning television show featuring documentaries on various topics in American history.

  • By teaching children sustainable, environmentally-friendly practices, educators make strides toward changing the future for the better. At summer camps, for example, children can learn about sustainable farming while exploring the world around them and breathing fresh air. Sarah Gamble ’13 will spend the summer as an intern for Shelburne Farms in Shelburne, Vt., where she will help run a series of camps. She is supported by the Joseph F. Anderson ’44 Internship Fund.

  • Many students wonder if they can afford to do an unpaid summer internship, especially when the internship takes place in a major metro area where they do not live. Through Hamilton's Summer Internship Funding (SIF) program, taking an unpaid internship may not be as difficult as you think.
