Author and former TIME journalist Barrett Seaman ’67 returned to Hamilton on Nov. 9 to discuss the role of journalism in modern society and the tendency of people today to cluster with other like-minded individuals. With the rise of accessible technology, this clustering has the consequence of making moderate and unbiased news a less valuable commodity. Seaman was the third guest in the SpecSpeak  journalism series.

The Hamilton Alumni in Real Estate group (HARE) has had successful installments in the metro New York City area, including their inaugural event in 2014 and the NESCAC Real Estate Association inaugural event. In addition to these events, members have come back to the Hill to mentor students on career opportunities in the real estate field.

The uneven cadence of fingers on a keyboard is almost background music in residence halls and academic buildings on campus. It could have been yesterday, when Lucas Phillips ’16, editor-in-chief of the campus’ newspaper, The Spectator, checked his email for contributions by his staff; or it may have been more than five decades before, when Henry Allen ’63 sat in his Kirkland Dormitory bedroom completing homework on his typewriter.

The Hamilton Program in New York City cohort attended the evening performance of the New York Philharmonic at the newly renamed David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center on Sept. 30. The Philharmonic Orchestra was conducted by Alan Gilbert, who began his tenure as the NYP music director in 2009 and is the first native New Yorker to hold the post.

In “The News and Information Future: It’s Not All Pandas and Puppies!” one family showed just how much the news media has changed not only between two generations but in the past decade. The Oct. 29 lecture was the first Spectator’s three-part journalism series, “SpecSpeak.”

Students and their families reunited for Hamilton’s annual Family Weekend on Oct. 22-25.  More than 1,100 visitors enjoyed a host of activities from poster sessions on summer research to athletic contests, poetry reading and performances.

Daniel Connolly ’85, P’18, a managing partner of Bracewell & Giuliani, was a trial and appellate attorney during Rudolph Giuliani’s mayoral administration (1993-2001). During his administration, Giuliani had exceptional goals to transform the character of New York City. In his Hamilton lecture on Oct. 22 Connolly spoke about three major Giuliani projects: merging police departments within the city, increasing property values through zoning laws, and eradicating consent decrees.

Prints by Amy Buchholz ’80 and Professors of Art Bruce Muirhead and William Salzillo are on display in the Society of American Graphic Artists (SAGA) centennial exhibition at The Art Students League of New York.

Hamilton’s Family Weekend will take place on campus from Oct. 22-25 with 1,100 family members and friends expected for the annual event. Families can attend Hamilton classes, enjoy music and dance performances or cheer on the Continentals at athletic contests.
