Six prizes were awarded across three categories in the annual Public Speaking Competition on Saturday, March 3, in the Chapel. The finalists were chosen after an open preliminary round held in February. Speakers’ presentations were either persuasive or informative in nature, and in one category students were asked to address an assigned topic.

After a busy fall semester that included a massive voter registration drive and watch parties for the presidential debates and election night, the College Democrats and College Republicans have shifted their focus this semester to achieving their common goal of increasing political engagement on campus. This week, they hosted a debate that pitted two teams against each other on a controversial subject in a forum that made room for audience participation.

After its victory at the Cornell Invitational, Hamilton’s Mock Trial team once again demonstrated its strength with a 5th place finish at their regional qualifier in Buffalo on Feb. 23-24. Compiling a record of 5-3, the team performed well enough to advance to the Opening Round Championship Series of the American Mock Trial Association’s (AMTA) national tournament.

The Hamilton Outing Club (HOC) ran two introductory ice climbing trips to the Adirondacks on Feb. 22-24. The trips, led by Director of Outdoor Education Andrew Jillings, focused on teaching students the basics of climbing waterfall ice using crampons and ice tools.

The students of Professor of English Margaret Thickstun’s “Experience of Reading” class took a step back in time on Feb. 23 with a visit to the Farmers’ Museum in Cooperstown. An hour away from Hamilton College, Cooperstown is best known as the home of the Baseball Hall of Fame, but the destination this day was its quaint historic village.

Hamilton sent a delegation of three students (Taylor Davis ‘15, Ellie Fausold ’13 and Lauren Howe’13) to the Real Food Challenge National Summit at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore on Feb. 15-17.  Real Food Challenge (RFC) is both a network of students and a national campaign to increase the procurement of “real food” on college and university campuses across the country.

Twelve Hamilton seniors were elected on Feb. 19 to the Epsilon chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest honor society. The inductees are Emily Anderson, Sarah Bither, Eryn Boyce, Lauren Howe, Sunyoung Hwang, Agne Jakubauskaite, Danielle Lashley, Jonathan Piskor, Akritee Shrestha, Erin Sullivan, Kathleen Vaughan and Gordon Wilkins.

Five Hamilton Nordic skiers headed north on the weekend of Feb. 14-16 to the 35th Gatineau Loppet in Quebec to compete against skiers of all ages from across the world. The group drove more than 240 miles from Clinton, N.Y., to the bustling city of Gatineau, Quebec, just across the river from Ottawa.

Kimberly Bogardus ’14, Leah Cairns ’13, Lennox Chitsike ’13 and Akritee Shrestha ’13 presented posters at the 57th Annual Biophysical Society Meeting that took place Feb. 2-6 in Philadelphia. They presented results obtained in the research laboratory of Associate Professor of Chemistry Myriam Cotten. The presentations were part of sessions on “Membrane Active Peptides and Toxins.”

Ernest Williams, the William R. Kenan Professor of Biology, led his Adirondack class -  Environmental Studies 220, Forever Wild: The Cultural and Natural Histories of the Adirondack Park - on a snowshoe hike into the wilderness near Old Forge on Feb. 10. The group hiked to a frozen-over beaver pond and identified tree species growing in the Adirondacks. It was a beautiful day for exploring the northern forest, with fresh snow and blue skies.
