Students participating in the fall 2012 New York City Program were fortunate to receive a private tour of the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Sept. 5 as their first outing of the semester.  The excursion was guided by Richard Turnbell, chair of the Department of Art History at FIT.  The current program, led by Professor of Economics Christophre Georges, has 15 participants.

Twelve juniors have begun the fall 2012 Program in Washington, which combines academic seminars, independent research and internships. Internships this semester include Department of Justice, Environmental Protection Agency, Democratic National Committee, and a variety of thinks tanks, consulting firms, and non-profits.   The semester  includes a co-curricular program of meetings with policymakers and excursions to take advantage of Washington’s educational and cultural assets. The program is directed this semester by Professor of Government David Paris ’71.

The second annual Sophomore JumpStart, created by Hamilton’s Maurice Horowitch Career Center, took place on Sept. 8 at the Radisson Hotel in Utica. Approximately 50 sophomores spent their Saturday morning listening to various speakers, learning resume building tips and taking assessments to gauge their potential career interests.

Members of the class of ’16 are settling in to life on the Hill, classes have begun and the new semester is off and running. One of the members of Hamilton’s newest group of students, Cassidy Dennison ’16, took time to reflect on the value of pre-orientation program Adirondack Adventure in helping students make the adjustment to college life. We started off college with a dangling participle. This may seem regressive to our high school and college education, but it actually furthered our knowledge of ourselves and our group. Our dangling participle was not a grammatical error; it consisted of a rope, two harnesses, two people and total trust. Though slightly intimidating, rock climbing at Chapel Pond in the Keene Valley was one of the best ways to begin college. Adirondack Adventure helps people make friends, try new things, and break free of the initial fears associated with college.

The fifth annual Hamilton Serves took place on Wednesday, Aug. 29, with the entire first-year class and new transfer students going out to volunteer at 60 community organizations.

USA Today published a front-page article titled “Student businesses market to lazy college classmates” featuring  HillFresh Laundry, the Hamilton-based service founded by Jeremy Young ’13 and run by a small team of Hamilton students.   The Aug. 28 piece focused on student entrepreneurial ventures that cater to student needs, from grocery shopping to laundry to shipping.

Peter Maher ’13 was featured on local television station YNN on Aug. 28 related to his research on the Rome, N.Y., police department. Maher, who served as an intern with the Rome Police department for two years, conducted a study on how policing is done in that city. It resulted in his recommendation that Rome form a Community Impact Unit (CIU), a group of four officers who will patrol by foot, by bicycle and only when necessary by car.

Families of first-year students arriving on Aug. 25 should be aware that the Village of Clinton is hosting an Art & Music Festival on Saturday, Aug. 25, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Please be advised that there might be traffic congestion in town.  All roads will be open but traffic may get a little backed up, so a bit more time might be needed to drive through town.

This summer four members of the Hamilton College Republicans worked in the political arena, campaigning for party candidates and serving as interns.

As a liberal arts college, Hamilton does not offer a major in journalism, but as Crystal Kim ’15 has discovered, there are a number of other opportunities on and off campus that can be taken advantage of by aspiring journalists. Kim was awarded a stipend from the Summer Internship Support Fund, managed by Hamilton’s Maurice Horowitch Career Center, to pursue an internship at the KoreAm Journal.
