Hamilton College men's golfer Jeff Corbett '09 (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham HS) has been selected a 2009 NCAA Division III Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar by the Golf Coaches Association of America.

Cathie Black, president of Hearst Magazines, told Hamilton's Class of 2009 to be agents of change at its commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 24. She also discussed changes underway in the media industry and the value of having first-rate communication skills. 

The Class of 2009 held a celebratory tree-planting and plaque unveiling ceremony in honor of their time on the Hill and their Senior Gift on Saturday, May 23, near the Kirner-Johnson Building ramp.

The Hamilton College chapter of Sigma Xi, the scientific research society, elected 32 students and three alumni to associate membership and four faculty to full membership on May 11.

After last year's successful launch of Ham's Cram & Scram, the recycling effort is back and it appears that it will surpass last year's collection. The purpose of Cram & Scram is to collect recyclable/reusable items from residence halls – everything from furniture and appliances to clothing, books and unopened food items. Rather than throwing the items away and sending them to the county landfill, they are collected and sorted for reuse.

Melissa Kong '08 recently had the opportunity to interview Cathie Black, president of Hearst Magazines and Hamilton's 2009 Commencement speaker. In the following article, Black describes her experiences looking for that first job and offers advice for the Class of 2009.

Twenty-four members of Hamilton's class of 2009 were elected on May 21 to the Epsilon chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest honor society. They join 24 classmates who were elected earlier this year.

The winners of the Beverly S. and Eugene M. Tobin Employee Awards were announced at Hamilton's annual employee service recognition luncheon on May 18 at Soper Commons. Ray Cyr, custodian at Carnegie Residence Hall; Lisa Magnarelli '96, assistant dean of students for campus life/ director of student activities; and Kelly Walton, senior assistant to the associate dean of faculty, were honored. Acting President and Dean of Faculty Joe Urgo presented the awards following the recognition of employees who had achieved 10, 20, 30 and 40 years of service to the College.

Tim Minella '09, a double major in government and physics, has been honored with the Chambliss Astronomy Achievement Student Award by the American Astronomical Society (AAS). These awards are given to recognize exemplary research by undergraduate and graduate students who present at one of the poster sessions at the meetings of the American Astronomical Society. Minella presented results of his research at the 213th meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Long Beach, Calif., in January. The awardees receive a Chambliss medal and a certificate.

Emily Powell, a senior majoring in comparative literature and Hispanic studies, has received a $1,000 award to pursue a campus/community project through the Carter Academic Service Entrepreneur (CASE) program conducted by New York Campus Compact (NYCC).
