Members of the Hamilton community were interested in far more than the results of the presidential election on Tuesday.  Two Hamilton alumni and a Kirkland alumna were also running for elected office.

Brian Levin-Stankevich ’72  was inaugurated the 17th president of Westminster College (Salt Lake City, Utah) on Oct. 20.  The Buffalo, N.Y., native served as chancellor of the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire from 2006 to 2012, before becoming president of Westminster.  He has also held positions at the University at Buffalo (SUNY), Florida Atlantic University and Eastern Washington University.

Colby-Sawyer College has awarded William Thomas '72 the Nancy Beyer Opler '56 Award for Excellence in Advising. Thomas is a professor of natural sciences at the college and a cellular and developmental biologist.  In the summer he conducts research on cell adhesion at the Curie Institute in Paris.

Hamilton’s focus on the development of effective written and verbal skills readily applies to students pursuing careers in communications, and if the attendance at the Media Board’s Multimedia Journalism Forum is any indicator, there are many such students at the College.

Brian Levin-Stankevich ’72 was named president of Westminster College on March 27. He is currently the chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, a position he has held since 2006, and was previously interim president of Eastern Washington University.

Starting Feb. 23, all Hamilton students are recipients of a $10,000 “scholarship.” Is this implausible? Feb. 23, declared Starting Today Others Pay or S.T.O.P. Day, marks the turning point on the academic calendar when tuition stops covering expenses and the philanthropy of others takes over. Many, if not most, students are unaware that income from tuition, room and board provides only 65 percent of the cost of a Hamilton education.

Created with the help of 44 student writers and photographers working with 15 alumni mentors and editors, among others, the special “200 Days” issue of the Hamilton Alumni Review marks the College’s Bicentennial by documenting 200 days on (and occasionally off) the Hill.

Christie Bell Vilsack K ’72 recently announced her intention to run for Congress in Iowa’s new Fourth Congressional District.

Jeffrey Immelt, chairman and CEO of General Electric Company (GE), told Hamilton’s Class of 2010 to be optimistic at its commencement ceremony on May 23. Acknowledging that we are in economically difficult times, Immelt emphasized the need for creative and independent thinkers and the importance of maintaining a spirit of reality-based optimism.

Dick Patrick '72 was named the recipient of the 2010 Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s Mel Greenberg Media Award.  The award is granted to one who "has best displayed a commitment to women’s basketball and to advancing the role of the media in the women’s game" and who has had a "positive impact on the growth and national or regional exposure of the sport."  The winner must have participated in women’s basketball media for at least five years.
