In an email to the Hamilton community on May 12, President Steven Tepper shared that William H. Luers ’51, GP’14, one of this nation’s most distinguished foreign service officers and the former president of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, died on May 10 at the age of 95. Luers was the recipient of a Hamilton honorary degree in 1984, served as the Sol. M. Linowitz Professor of International Affairs in 2010, and was a regular visitor to campus, especially later in his career and after retiring from the Met in 1999.

On April 26, Ambassador William Luers ’51, Linowitz Professor and keynote speaker, joined Ambassador Edward Walker Jr. ’62 and Professor Alan Cafruny for a discussion on U.S.-Iranian relations. Ambassador Luers provided an alternative view on U.S. relations with Iran that centered on more constructive communication rather than the accusatory and uncompromising policy currently employed.
