For the second year, Hamilton students served as mentors to Clinton Middle School students who are participating in Olympics of the Visual Arts (OVA).  OVA is a state-wide competition where middle schoolers have the opportunity to participate in longer term art projects outside of the classroom.

A lot happened before the Theatre Department’s musical Spring Awakening opened on April 14 in the Eugene Romano Theatre.  Starting with auditions in February the production took shape as  sets were  designed, music was learned, costumes were made and many hours of rehearsals were held. College photographer Nancy Ford spent the last two months capturing what went on behind the scenes before actors took the stage.  Take a look at what goes in to the making of a musical.

Tracy L. Adler, director of the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art, presented “What I Talk About When I Talk About Art: Customizing the Visitor Experience” on April 7 at ArtTable’s Spring PechaKucka in New York City.

With yoga mats slung underneath their arms, a trail of students made their way across campus to the Chapel on Saturday, April 9. As the Chapel bells rang for 10 a.m., the first On-Campus Mindfulness Retreat began.

A solo exhibition of sculptures by Associate Professor of Art Rebecca Murtaugh is on display through April 22 at the Thomas Hunter Project Space in Manhattan. The show, titled Cascade, includes colorful works in unfired clay, wood, paint and mixed media.

New York sculptor Huma Bhabha will present a lecture about her work on Wednesday, March 2, at 4:30 p.m., in the Bradford Auditorium, KJ, as part of the Visiting Artist Series. This lecture is sponsored by the Art Department and is free and open to the public.

The Hispanic Studies Department recently took students to view works by Cuban American artist Emilio Sánchez at Munson Williams Proctor Arts Institute (MWPAI) in Utica.  Mary Murray, curator of modern and contemporary art at MWPAI, did a behind-the-scenes tour for Hispanic Studies students in February.

The work of Katharine Kuharic, the Kevin W. Kennedy Professor of Art, is featured in an exhibition at CB1 Gallery in Los Angeles. Tight Ass: Labor Intensive Drawing and Realism opens on Saturday, Feb. 27, with a reception from 3-6 p.m. The exhibition runs through April 9.

The opening of the Wellin Museum of Art’s two new exhibitions, Yun-Fei Ji:The Intimate Universe and Pure Pulp: Contemporary Artists Working in Paper at Dieu Donné, was attended by a large receptive crowd that included several arts writers. The result has been several articles about the shows in significant arts publications reaching audiences far removed from Clinton, N.Y.

The Wellin Museum of Art co-hosted a Chinese New Year celebration with the Wellin Initiative for Student Engagement (WISE), Asian Cultural Society (ACS) and Hamilton American Chinese Exchange (HACE) on Feb. 8 at the Museum.
