David H. Bailey, a researcher at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the University of California, Davis, will present the James S. Plant Distinguished Scientist Lecture on Thursday, Nov. 3, at 8 p.m., in the Chapel.

Author Stuart Ewen, a historian and lecturer on media and consumer culture, will present a lecture titled “The ‘I’ and the Eye: A Brief History of Optics and Individualism” on Wednesday, Nov. 2, at 7:15 p.m., in the Bradford Auditorium, KJ. The lecture is free and open to the public.

The Hamilton Arboretum’s 2016-17 Third Saturday series opens Saturday, Oct. 22, when Aida Khalil, professor of landscape design and management at SUNY Morrisville State College.

Jonathan Adler, the Johan Verheij Memorial Professor of Law and director of the Center for Business Law and Regulation at Case Western Reserve University School of Law, will present a lecture on Wednesday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m., in the Red Pit, KJ. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Berni Searle, a South African artist whose work is part of the Wellin Museum’s “Senses of Time” exhibition, will discuss her performative video with curator Karen Milbourne and President David Wippman. The lecture will be held on Tuesday Oct. 18, at 4 p.m., in the Overlook at the Wellin Museum. It is free and open to the public.

Sandra Hildreth, an Adirondack-based artist, will present a lecture and slides about her work on Monday, Oct. 17, at 7:30 p.m., in the Taylor Science Center, room 3024. The lecture is sponsored by the Environmental Studies Department and is free and open to the public.

Six “Alex” talks, modeled on the “Ted” series of short but powerful talks, featured faculty speaking on their area of expertise on Oct. 7 as part of Fall Weekend.

Emad Kiyaei, executive director of the American Iranian Council (AIC), will give a lecture, “The 2016 U.S. Elections and what it means for U.S.-Iran Relations,” on Wednesday, Oct. 5, at 7:30 p.m., in the Red Pit, KJ.

Having attracted more than 9,000 students to his first offering of Jazz: the Music, the Stories, the Players, Joe Williams Director of the Jazz Archive and Lecturer in Music Performance Monk Rowe will again offer this free six-week online program beginning on Sept. 6 via the edX platform. The course is designed to appeal equally to the casual listener, the avid fan and the proficient jazz player, according to Rowe. 

Robert Jensen, professor of economics and public policy at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, gave a Levitt Center- sponsored talk on April 21 about the gender bias in developing countries. In particular, he focused on the economic and cultural implications of preferences toward male children in India.
