  • Members of the Hamilton community gathered to hear Dr. Michael Dorsey’s lecture, “Pathways Beyond Paris: Toward Energy & Climate Justice” on Feb. 4. Dorsey is the interim director for the Joint Center of Political and Economic Studies in Washington, D.C.

  • Human rights activist John Dau, a former “Lost Boy of Sudan,” spoke on Feb. 3 about his life experiences and his successful career in the United States. The talk was presented by the Levitt Center Speaker Series.

  • In his Jan. 25 talk “Leading Nowhere: the Futility and Farce of Global Climate Negotiations,” Oren Cass criticized the global approach to addressing climate change. He claimed that it’s not that leaders don’t want to reduce emissions, it’s that it isn’t possible based on insurmountable challenges like cost and complexity. 

  • In celebration of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the Days-Massolo Center hosted its annual community dinner. This year, attendees were treated to live a jazz ensemble led by Professor of Music Michael Woods and listened to speaker Jennicet Gutiérrez, a trans-liberator activist, before breaking into round table discussions on the topic of select MLK quotes. The event was the first in the DMC’s spring series, “After the Anger, Can You?”

  • The Hamilton College Arboretum Third Saturday series continues on Saturday, Jan. 16, with Steve Blair, International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) certified arborist and representative of Bartlett Tree Experts. He will present a lecture titled “From the Cradle to the Grave, Tree and Shrub Care for the CNY Homeowner” at 10 a.m. in the Taylor Science Center’s Kennedy Auditorium.

  • Neil deGrasse Tyson, an American astrophysicist and director of the Hayden Planetarium, will appear as the next guest and the first scientist in the Hamilton College Sacerdote Great Names Series on Tuesday, April 12, at 7 p.m., in the Margaret Bundy Scott Field House.  He will give an interactive presentation which will followed by a question and answer period. The event will be free and open to the public.

  • Each day, we weigh one decision against another using layman’s probability and statistics. Unfortunately, such estimates are often skewed, whether by misinformation or overconfidence; which, although not a problem when deciding which new ice cream flavor to try, has dramatic consequences when the stakes include military intervention in the form of American troops and innocent foreign nationals. One might hope that such decisions are more precise, or weighed more heavily, than comparably trivial matters; however, Jeffrey Friedman, assistant professor of government at Dartmouth College, maintains that they are not.
