Students participating in Hamilton’s Program in Washington, D.C. recently visited the Newseum. The Newseum, featuring many interactive exhibits, is the museum dedicated to the history of news.  Its seven-floors are made up of thematically organized theaters and galleries.

A little real world experience before graduation gives students a definite advantage and Hamilton’s Program in Washington D.C. allows students to do just that. In addition to taking classes and writing a thesis, each of the eight students on the program heads to the office each morning, fulfilling the internship portion of the experience.

Students in the Hamilton College Program in Washington, D.C. recently met with Howard Steinman ’93, a principal with A.T. Kearney, a global management consulting firm employing over 3000 people worldwide.

Students in the Hamilton College Program in Washington, D.C., recently met with program officers at the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) for a discussion of the organization’s efforts to promote human rights and democratic change in the post-communist region. The endowment is “a U.S. initiative to strengthen democratic institutions throughout the world through private, non-governmental efforts” that “embodies a broad, bipartisan U.S. commitment to democracy.”

Students in the Hamilton College Program in Washington, D.C., were treated to a private tour of the Pentagon by Lt. Col. Eric Hannis ’90 on April 16. He is currently serving as the country director for Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan in the Middle East Division of Air Force International Affairs.

Students in the Hamilton College Program in Washington, D.C., recently participated in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery in honor of all Hamiltonians who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Students in the Hamilton College Program in Washington, D.C., met with officials from the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor at the U.S. Department of State on April 2. Representatives from press and policy, foreign affairs, the Office of Global Programs and a program analyst comprised a panel that discussed the bureau’s efforts to promote democracy, protect human rights and international religious freedom and to advance labor rights globally.

Students in the Hamilton College Program in Washington, D.C. met with Rep. Richard L. Hanna (R-22) in his Capitol Hill office on March 12.  He represents New York’s 22nd district in the U.S. House of Representatives, which includes Hamilton College.

Students in the Hamilton College Program in Washington, D.C., met with Ambassador Prudence Bushnell, CEO of Sage Associates, for a discussion of U.S. democracy promotion on March 5.  Ambassador Bushnell is the founder and co-director of the Levitt Leadership Institute at Hamilton College.

Students in the Hamilton College Program in Washington, D.C., met on Feb. 12 with Ted Piccone, the acting vice president and director of the foreign policy program at the Brookings Institution, for an in-depth discussion of U.S. democracy promotion. The Brookings Institution is a highly respected, private, nonprofit organization devoted to independent research and innovative policy solutions.
