As he rises through the ranks in real estate property management, Joshua Bruff ’05 is often reminded that he is Black. His anecdotes prompt the question: What would you do in the same scenarios?

Activist, leader, and musician Xiuhtezcatl Martinez—also known as “X”— shared his message about climate and social justice and other topics, in a conversation with the Hamilton community on April 22. Mckela Kanu ’22 and Tenzin Sherpa ’23 moderated the conversation, which was part of The C. Christine Johnson Voices of Color Lecture Series.

To many Hamilton students, the Days-Massolo Center may feel as familiar as the campus furniture. But 10 years ago, the Center didn’t even exist — it was in part through the efforts of the Social Justice Initiative (SJI) that the DMC opened its doors in 2011.

Last fall, the College-Community Partnership for Racial Justice assembled a series of eight webinars focused on racial equity and police reform, sponsored by the Levitt Center Law and Justice Lab. Since then, the Partnership has collected and organized data from multiple surveys aimed at gauging public opinion on these issues. The results of these surveys were discussed in a virtual town hall on Feb. 11.

A soft glow filled campus on Feb. 3 as the Hamilton community honored the Black Lives Matter movement through a virtual vigil. The event, which kicked off Black History Month, featured ice and paper bag luminarias that were lighted and placed outside the Days-Massolo Center, the Chapel, and Sadove Student Center.
