With the New Year comes a bright and shiny “new” Alumni Gym.

The original Alumni Gymnasium was completed in 1940 and was extensively renovated in 1978 to accommodate the expanded co-educational student body. The latest renovation project cost $2 million and took six months to complete.

“The renovation was undertaken to address major safety, facilities condition and programmatic deficiencies,” said Roger Wakeman, associate vice president for facilities & planning. “The update provides a space for varsity basketball teams to practice, and a much improved home for recreational sports and physical education classes.”

Thirty workers from across eight trades worked on the gym renovation. A total of 40,405 linear feet of maple flooring was used to cover the gym floor.
