The weather was perfect for America's Greatest Heart Run and Walk, and for Utica in February that's a miracle! When the 3-mile and 5-mile walkers started off at 10:30 a.m., it was still quite chilly. By the time we reached "heart-break hill"( aka Elm Street in New York Mills) near the end of the walk, the sun was out, and we all stripped down to t-shirts.

Overall the run had more participants than last year, and we were pleased because Team Hamilton, in addition to the administrators, faculty and staff and their families, had even more students involved than usual. Several of the athletic teams, such as women's lacrosse, participated.

One of the "inspirational nominees" was Sarah Milograno, a 12-year-old girl who was born with a congenital heart defect and has had to undergo four surgeries. Her cousin is a Hamilton student, and Hamilton students and fraternity brothers were on the "Sarah's Angels" team.

The Heart Run is a great opportunity to get some exercise, but even more importantly, it's a chance to raise money to support the American Heart Association's fight against heart disease -- our nation's number-one killer.

Although the atmosphere is fun like the Boilermaker with thousands of people participating, this is for such a good cause. Also there are so many people who walk for a personal reason. Their t-shirts with photos of loved ones and words remembering their fathers, mothers, sisters and children bring tears to your eyes.

Another benefit is what it means for health care in our community. Only a few years ago, many heart patients had to go to Albany or Syracuse. Today, many procedures can be done right here in Utica. Also the Masonic Research Center is doing important research that will benefit all heart patients. And the money comes, in part, from our very own Team Hamilton and the Utica Heart Run and Walk.

The final numbers aren't in for this year, but we know we had more participants, and we're confident we raised more money than ever!
