Finlay Adamson ’22.
“Private immigration prisons maintain some of the most disturbing and brutal conditions within the American prison system,” Finlay Adamson ’22 wrote in his essay titled “Biden Is Locking Up Thousands of Immigrants in For-Profit Detention Centers” in Jacobin magazine. “Today, over 70 percent of immigrant detainees are being held in privately owned prisons.”

In his June 3 opinion piece, Adamson reminded his readers, “While prohibiting the private contracting of immigrant detention centers was a core plank of Biden’s criminal justice platform during the 2020 election, the president has so far taken no action on this front.”

Right-wing defenders of detention centers, Adamson wrote, claim that their continued existence protects national security. Adamson refuted that perspective, referencing the fact that almost 80 percent of detainees have no criminal record or have only committed a minor offense such as a traffic violation.

A world politics major, Adamson will travel soon to Bulgaria as the recipient of a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship.
