Buchman Named Inaugural John Baldwin Professor; 10 Appointed to Endowed Chairs
The Baldwin professorship was established by Jeffrey Steinkamp, Class of 1953, to honor John L. Baldwin, Jr., a professor of music at Hamilton College from 1946 to 1964. During his time at Hamilton, Baldwin served as Music Department chair and director of the College Choir. He directed the Alumni Choir at Reunions for 20 years until his death in 1999.
The Baldwin professorship comes with a stipend to be used for purposes appropriate to professional growth, including travel, equipment, and research. It is specified for music, and, when appropriate, for the director of choirs.
Buchman is director of College Orchestra & Chamber Music and associate chair of the Dance and Movement Studies Department.
She was a trombonist with the Syracuse Orchestra (formerly Symphoria) and served as its education and outreach conductor. Her work in regional arts advocacy was recognized by the Society for New Music in 2013 and Civic Morning Musicals in 2014.
Buchman was principal trombonist of the San Diego Symphony for nine years. She won prizes at the ARD International Music Competition in Munich, Germany, and the New York Philharmonic Young Artists Concerto Competition. A longtime student of movement, she recently began studying ballet. Buchman explores the parallels between music and dance in her teaching and performance.
