Delaware Republican Michael Castle, a 1961 Hamilton graduate, easily won re-election to his sixth term in Congress with 72 percent of the vote, according to unofficial election returns Tuesday night.
A native of Wilmington, Del., Castle has never lost a race for statewide elected office. He is a former deputy attorney general, state legislator, lieutenant governor and two-term governor. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1993.
In endorsing his candidacy, the Wilmington News Journal opined: "Delaware is entitled to only one seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, so the person we send to Washington, D.C., must be of the highest caliber. Michael N. Castle has the intelligence, integrity and experience to give Delaware the best representation."
The paper described Castle as a fiscal conservative and social moderate who "often surprises on certain issues." He chairs the Subcommittee on Education Reform and is a member of the House Financial Services Committee and the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.
After receiving his degree from Hamilton, Castle earned a law degree from Georgetown University. He recently returned to campus for his 40th Class Reunion.
