Journalist Jessica Moulite ’14 has received the national Posse Foundation’s Ainslie Alumni Achievement award, which the foundation bestows annually on an alum who has demonstrated leadership while giving back to the world.
Moulite, a member of Hamilton’s Miami Posse, is the second Hamilton graduate to receive the Ainslie award. The first was Loubens Theork ’06, who was selected in 2010.
The honor comes with a $10,000 grant, which will help Moulite make the move from her career as a video journalist with The Root to full-time doctoral student at Howard University. Her pursuit of a doctorate in sociology begins Aug. 23.
“I spent the last number of months truly thinking about injustice, how the media discussed last summer's racial reckoning and the pandemic, and that understandably affected my storytelling,” Moulite said. “However, I'm currently at a place where I want to go beyond reporting on them, and begin working towards a greater understanding of the eventual elimination of the system roots of social inequality all together. I’m sure my and journalism’s paths will cross again in the future, but right now is my time.”
She’s been with The Root for three years and earned a master’s degree in journalism at the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California, where she received the Annenberg Graduate Fellowship. At Hamilton she majored in women’s studies and communication and was a Gates Millennium Scholar.
