Gillian King, a business executive with broad experience in finance-based decision making, operations, human resources, and organizational management, has been named chief of staff and secretary to the Board of Trustees at Hamilton College.
King has been serving as interim chief of staff since August. The appointment, which follows an extensive national search, is effective immediately.
“Gill brings directly relevant experience and skills to the chief of staff role at Hamilton,” said President David Wippman. “During the four months she served in that position on an interim basis, she demonstrated keen judgment, diplomacy, integrity, and thoughtfulness. My colleagues and I look forward to continuing to work with her to advance Hamilton’s priorities in the future.”

As chief of staff, King will advise the president and coordinate executive-level decision-making, playing an important role in planning, prioritizing, and implementing campus initiatives. She will serve as an officer of the College, sit on the senior staff, and report to the president. As secretary to the Board of Trustees, King will manage all trustee activities, including planning and implementing meetings of the board and its committees, and advising on policy decisions, board management, and College procedures.
King joined the Hamilton staff in 2016 as director of academic finance and resources. In that role she managed and advised the vice president of academic affairs and dean of faculty on all matters related to finance and personnel in that division. A search to fill that position will begin shortly.
King worked previously for Accenture from 1998 to 2014 and spent nine years with IBM’s Microelectronics Division in a variety of finance-related positions. The recipient of a bachelor’s degree from Skidmore College, she earned an MBA from the Johnson School at Cornell University. She and her husband, Jamie King, director of racquet sports and associate professor of physical education, have been members of the Hamilton and Clinton communities since 2000.
