Studying in Florence, Italy
Guerra who will study in Florence, Italy this fall, said she’s eager to “explore the rich political and cultural history while gaining a deeper understanding of international issues through a different lens. As a Government major, experiencing Italian society firsthand will enhance my global perspective and inform my studies of governance and social structures,” she said.
Guerra is most looking forward “to immersing myself in daily life in Florence, learning the language, connecting with locals, and experiencing the city's deep historical and political roots firsthand.”
On campus, she is a member of the varsity softball team, a class representative under Student Government Alliance, a member of the DEI Athletics Committee, and a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee.
Studying in Taiwan
Huang said she was born in Taiwan but moved with her family to Southern California when she was a toddler. “I chose to study [in Taiwan] because I feel the need to revisit my culture now that I am coming into adulthood, to reconnect with places, people, and languages that have faded for me over the years.”
She said she’s eager to have the opportunity to intern at a Taiwanese organization and gain professional and linguistic experience abroad. “Other than that, I am extremely excited to experience Taiwan's food and drink culture, from the famous bubble tea to the infamous stinky tofu,” Huang said.
On campus, Huang does research and participates in Model UN, and works at the Advancement Office and the Levitt Center.
Studying in Costa Rica
Torres chose to study in Costa Rica as a way to explore his Latin American heritage. Having visited his parents’ home country of Mexico, he said “I began thinking about my culture and how I could connect that to studying abroad. I decided that the best place to go would be to another Latin American country so that I could learn more about the culture and how it is similar or different to the culture in Mexico.”
“Costa Rica is the perfect place for me to explore a new place while focusing on my career goals and working with people who share similar experiences as me,” he said.
During his time abroad, Torres looks forward to studying various exotic animals he’ll be able to work with. “When I decided to be a pre-veterinary student I spent a lot of time working with small companion animals and some farm animals. I was always interested in exotic animals and this would be my first time getting hands-on experience with them,” he said.
Torres will explore how caring for these animals differs from the ways we care for the animals we have as pets. “I am also very excited to meet the many other students in my cohort who are just as interested in animal care as I am,” he added.
At Hamilton he is a member of La Vanguardia, Feminists of Color Collective, Students for Justice in Palestine, Questbridge Scholars Network, Meditation Club, Film Club, and will be an Orientation trip leader this summer.
