This past week we visited the Tenement Museum. The tour was very interesting and I learned a lot about the city during the turn of the century. My grandparents were poor immigrants who moved here in the 1920s and now I have a better appreciation for how they lived. After the tour, Jon and I ventured a few blocks east to eat at Katz's Deli. This cafeteria style deli is located at 205 E. Houston Street, where it has stood since its opening in 1888.

Katz's is an institution known for its enormous pastrami sandwiches. When you walk in there is a huge counter with dozens of workers taking orders. There is no line, so only the strong and aggressive survive. Once you've elbowed your way to the front, you can sample cuts of meat that they are serving. The food was great and very filling, and the atmosphere was even better. On the walls were pictures of the famous people, from Al Gore to Dan Ackroyd, who have eaten there in the past.  It was a great experience and a good meal. Make sure you bring your appetite and your wallet; two sandwiches with a plate of kosher pickles and two sodas cost $30.00.  It's worth every penny.
