The Hypothesis of the Gospels: Narrative Traditions in Hellenistic Reading Culture, by Visiting Assistant Professor of Classics and Religious Studies Ian Mills, was recently published by Fortress Press. The book explores how gospel narratives were shaped in ancient Hellenistic literary culture through the concept of hypothesis, in which “different versions of a story were imagined as sharing a narrative core.”
Though this model was adopted by early Christian writers at the end of the second century to describe gospel literature, legitimize its pluriformity, and limit its diversity, Mills said its components were already present in the earliest evidence for the reception of gospels.
