Yankee ’25 Named Udall Fellow
Anna Yankee ’25 has been awarded a Morris Udall Fellowship. The Udall Foundation presents scholarships to college sophomores and juniors for leadership, public service, and commitment to issues related to Native American nations or the environment. Yankee, an environmental studies major, is a sustainability coordinator and Harvest food-salvage student manager.
The Udall scholarship honors the legacies of Morris Udall and Stewart Udall, whose careers had a significant impact on Native American self-governance, health care, and the stewardship of public lands and natural resources.
Hamilton’s last Udall Scholar was Jennifer Kleindienst in 2008.
Khan ’24 and Team Win Third Place in Wege Prize Competition
Mathematics and computer science double major Zaman Khan ’24 is a member of a team of five students from other colleges and universities that won third place in the 2023 Wege Prize competition, the prestigious global competition for sustainable innovation and the circular economy. Khan’s team – named UnWastewater – presented their innovative system that uses microbes to convert wastewater into raw materials for use in industrial and commercial products, closing the circle between the production and disposal of pharmaceutical chemicals.

Hamilton Wins Bronze at Spoken and Written Russian Olympics
Michael Ko ’25, Mac Donovan ’26, Iris Izydorczak ’25, Tonwa Hauff ’23, and Kate Constan ’26 competed in the Olympics of Spoken and Written Russian, which took place at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in April. First-year and second-year students of Russian competed against teams from Hobart and William Smith, West Point, Skidmore, Vassar, Binghamton, and Colgate, testing their proficiency and fluency in both written and spoken Russian.
Ko and Donovan tied for third place in the first-year competition, prompting the judges to re-examine the competition’s raw score. In the end, Ko won the bronze medal for Team Hamilton.
Students Initiated Into Sigma Xi
Twelve members of the Class of 2023 were recently initiated into Hamilton’s Chapter of Sigma Xi, the international research honor society for science and engineering. They included Hannah Budner, Luke Cohen-Abeles, Qiran (Rex) Fan, Elizabeth Gaillard, Delia Hoyt, Charlotte (Charlie) Ives, Olivia James, Anne (Claire) McCaslin, Trevor Scheuing, Daisy Sulavik, Molly Symmonds, and Katherine (Katie) Tanner.
According to its website, Sigma Xi is “one of the oldest and largest scientific organizations in the world” and “has a distinguished history of service to science and society for more than 125 years.” The organization claims more than 200 Nobel Prize winners as members.
HCEMS Students Honored With Award
Four members of Hamilton College Emergency Medical Services (HCEMS) and a Campus Safety officer were awarded a Unit Citation in April by the Clinton Fire Department. Seth Tobin ’25, Bobbi Roca ’24, Lucy Kiernat ’23, and Hannah Singer ’24 were recognized for their efforts in rendering aid to a student experiencing a life-threatening medical emergency. All of the students are certified emergency medical technicians (EMTs).
The citation read: “Hamilton College EMS was dispatched to assist a student in crisis on January 22, 2023. Upon arrival at the scene, HCEMS personnel administered swift and effective medical care to a student in a life-threatening medical condition. After the arrival of Clinton Fire medical personnel, HCEMS members continued to administer care and invaluably assist CFD EMTs with further life-saving measures. HCEMS performed flawlessly during a high-stress, fast-paced emergency.
“The quick actions of HCEMS care providers contributed significantly to the overall positive outcome of the event. Their competent and effective medical care aided a fellow student in their time of crisis. The HCEMS organization should be proud of the life-saving service provided that day and the example they set for fellow students.”
The CFD thanked and recognized all 25 members of HCEMS for their extraordinary ongoing service to the Hamilton college community. “As the director of HCEMS, I am proud of our agency’s membership and thank them for their selfless participation in a vital, real-world activity,” said David Goldman.
National Fellowships and Scholarships in 2023
Dewayne Martin ’24 was named Hamilton’s second Truman Scholar. The Truman is the nation’s premier scholarship for students interested in pursuing public service. Martin is a public policy major and Posse Foundation scholar from Miami.
Salwa Sidahmed ’23 received a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship and will explore plant-based practices and sustainability in five countries.
Six members of the Class of 2023 were awarded Fulbright English Teaching Assistantships. The U.S. State Department program is aimed at improving foreign students’ English language abilities and knowledge of the United States while increasing the Fulbright Scholars’ own language skills and knowledge of the host country.
Abigail Moone ’23 and Charlie Ratner ’23 received the College’s Bristol Fellowships that will enable them to undertake worldwide research projects that encourage both “discovery of self and the world.”
