Associate Professor of Classics Jesse Weiner recently presented “Heroines and Heroes from Greek Mythology to New World Colonization” at the Fort Schuyler Club in Utica. He was invited to speak by the Monday Club, a women’s organization founded in the 1890s that included wives of Hamilton professors as members, to introduce next year’s programming theme, “Heroines and Heroes.”
Drawing upon structuralist and feminist approaches to myth, Weiner connected the ancient mythological figures of Medea, Ariadne, and Dido with Malintzin (also known as La Malinche), Pocahontas, and Sacagawea, three figures featured prominently in narratives of European settlement in the Americas.
