The Commissioner's Advisory Council on Higher Education will identify and prioritize critical issues in higher education. The council will advise the commissioner on the implications of issues affecting students, postsecondary institutions and the state as a whole.
In addition to serving on this new panel, Tobin is a member of the Board of Directors of the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities. He also serves on the Commission on Policy Analysis for the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities.
Tobin was named the 18th president of Hamilton College in December 1993. Prior to his appointment, he served as acting president, dean of faculty (1988-1993), and as chairman of the Department of History and director of the American studies program (1986-88). He continues to teach a seminar each spring and has been a member of the Hamilton faculty since coming to the college in 1980 as an assistant professor.
A 1968 graduate of Rutgers University, Tobin received his master's degree in 1970 and his Ph.D. in 1972 in the History of American Civilization from Brandeis University.
