Peter Michailidis ’16 recently launched a charitable effort that strives to raise awareness about the nationwide opioid epidemic. The charity pays tribute to the memory of his close friend and fellow Hamilton alumnus, Ted Barrett ’14.

Barrett died in January 2016 after a struggle with opioid addiction.

Michailidis partnered with Shatterproof, a non-profit working to reverse the course of the opioid epidemic, to create the “Hanging with Ted” initiative.

Michailidis said that he has learned that not many Americans understand how to identify and address a friend or loved one who is struggling with addiction. The goal of “Hanging with Ted” is to change this perception of opioid addiction, encourage education, and foster awareness.

Michailidis describes Barrett as “exceptionally generous with his love and care for others,” and someone who “wanted everyone else around him to have fun.” With that in mind, Michailidis has organized a fundraiser in New York City.

The event, called the Big Apple Hunt, is a charity scavenger hunt in which teams will compete and raise money for Shatterproof. The fundraiser also includes a reception with music, guest speakers, prizes and a silent auction, along with an open bar and food. The event is on April 7th.

David M Solomon '84, P'16  will serve as deejay for the fundraiser.
