 Heather Sullivan.

Since April, four articles by Associate Professor of Government Heather Sullivan have been published by Good Authority, a website that features pieces on timely political science topics written for the general public. Sullivan was selected as a Good Authority fellow for the 2024-25 term running from March 2024 through February 2025.

In Sullivan’s first article, “Using riot police to break up peaceful protest is becoming common,” she explored policies, designed to manage protests peacefully, that have been rolled back by authorities.

“Mexico’s next president – and AMLO’s legacy” was published in May. Sullivan wrote about the June elections that would determine Mexico’s future course on several important issues.

The U.S. court case that found Chiquita liable for killings carried out by a Colombian paramilitary group was the subject of “Chiquita and the long, dark history of conducting business in weak states,” published in June.

Sullivan’s August piece, “Maduro’s disputed win in Venezuela’s election sparks widespread unrest,” explains Venezuela’s 2024 election as an example of why authoritarian leaders hold and manipulate elections.

Good Authority is the successor to The Monkey Cage, a site that was founded in 2007 and published at The Washington Post from 2013-2022. The fellowship program invites political scientists to write about “timely events and evergreen issues and concerns,” drawing from their own research as well as that of their peers.
