Professor of Comparative Literature Nancy Sorkin Rabinowitz presented an invited lecture on June 27 at the Institute of Classical Studies in London. “The War on Women” was part of a graduate workshop titled “Greek Tragedy, Women and War.” The event was sponsored by the Classical Reception Studies Network.

Rabinowitz analyzed the interrelationship of war and gender in plays from Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides. She addressed ways Greek tragedy reveals that the Greeks understood war to affect women as well as men. “War was a community affair, not just about soldiers,” she said.

Also, under the aegis of the Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities at the University of Cambridge, Rabinowitz gave an invited talk based on her work teaching classics in prison through the Hamilton Oneida Prison Education Project. Her lecture, “Ancient Tragedy and Feminist Politics: Teaching Tragedy in Prison,” included material on the Medea Project: Theatre for Incarcerated Women, as well.
