Steve Culbertson '79, president and CEO of Youth Service America, will give a keynote address at the opening of Hamilton College’s new Community Outreach and Opportunity Project (COOP) on Thursday, Oct. 1, at 4 p.m. in the Chapel.

The Hamilton COOP aims to develop close and enduring relationships with its community partners in order to provide various contexts for learning among Hamilton students, and significant opportunities to make a difference locally. The COOP’s two main objectives are to enhance the educational experiences of our students and to create positive change for our community partners.

Culbertson heads Youth Service America (YSA), an international nonprofit resource center that partners with thousands of organizations committed to increasing the quality and quantity of volunteer opportunities for young people, ages 5-25. Founded in 1986, YSA's mission is to expand the impact of the youth service movement with communities, schools, corporations, and governments.

YSA organizes National Youth Service Day, a public education campaign highlighting the contributions that young people make to their communities. Culbertson developed the parallel Global Youth Service Day program in 2000, which his organization now coordinates in more than 100 countries.

The Nonprofit Times has named Culbertson to its list of "The 50 most powerful and influential leaders" in the sector, saying, "Culbertson has helped to position volunteering and young people as an issue and a national priority."

The talk is free and open to the public and will be followed by a reception in COOP’s offices.
