Lisa Grimes.
Although she is new to Hamilton, Lisa Grimes is not new to working with students applying for nationally and internationally competitive scholarships. At the College of William and Mary and later at the University of Virginia, Grimes gained experience helping students navigate the challenging process of applications and identify the various awards available to them. The desire to return to a liberal arts institution (and the cold weather) drew her to Hamilton, where she now serves as student fellowships coordinator. Here’s what she had to say about her time at Hamilton so far.
How will you work with students on applying for fellowships/scholarships?

I plan to continue the great work that Ginny Dosch has done and collaborate with colleagues across campus to make as many students as possible aware of fellowship opportunities. In addition to information sessions, I plan to offer writing workshops. I am particularly interested in helping students learn to write about themselves, their backgrounds, and their goals. I want students to feel empowered to stretch for things that they might feel are a little bit out of their reach.

What advice do you have for students hoping to apply for fellowships/scholarships?

Start exploring opportunities early. Become comfortable writing about yourself. Go to office hours, get to know your faculty, let them know what your goals are, and seek their advice. Also, cultivate relationships with non-faculty mentors on campus.

What’s been your favorite aspect of Hamilton so far?

It’s the students. Since I started in person on Dec. 1, I’ve had the opportunity to talk to a number of students. I’ve enjoyed meeting them, getting to hear their stories, and I appreciate the excitement and energy they bring to our conversations. I’m grateful for the warm welcome I’ve received by my colleagues as well.
