On a spectacular Sunday afternoon, Feb. 26, students on the Program in Washington visited Arlington National Cemetery, the final resting place for 14,000 veterans. The highlight of the visit was witnessing the changing of the guard ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns by soldiers of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment.
The group also paid its respects to Pierre L’Enfant, who designed the District of Columbia. L’Enfant died in poverty in 1825 and was buried in Prince Georges County, Maryland. Pursuant to an act of Congress, in 1909 L’Enfant was reinterred on the slope of the former home of Robert E. Lee overlooking the city he designed.
