Caroline Casey ’23 has spent the summer working as an intern at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. She tells what led her to this position and how it’s helped solidify her career goals.
Describe the work you’re doing at the Whitney Museum.

I’m working in the communications office. My job mostly consists of diligently monitoring all press for mentions of the Whitney as an institution, current and upcoming exhibits, and affiliated artists. Beyond just the Whitney, I also flag articles and announcements about the NYC and international art world that I think the communications department should be tuned into.

What attracted you to this internship?

Last semester, as my connection with the Women’s and Gender Studies Department deepened, I realized that my passion and interest are really rooted in a love for intentional, inclusive, and nuanced storytelling. I started to look into internships at contemporary art museums and galleries where artists who have been historically underrepresented are given a stage to showcase their work. I feel incredibly lucky to have been accepted into Whitney’s internship program.

What work went into getting this position?

During the spring semester, I did a lot of research to find museums where I felt connected with the mission and leaned on anyone I knew who was remotely connected to the field to find the most fitting opportunity.

What has been your favorite part of the internship?

The Office of People and Culture at the Whitney has done a phenomenal job of creating a speaker series for interns. Once or twice a week, all of the interns gather together to hear from some of the most senior staff members. They speak to us about their personal career paths and their job responsibilities, and they impart any wisdom that may be helpful to those of us about to enter the workforce.

What have you learned while in this position?

Broadly, I have learned to really appreciate all of the behind-the-scenes work that goes into operating and maintaining a museum, especially one like the Whitney that has considerable cultural importance. Most of us enter museums as visitors, consuming the art and exhibitions presented to us and never considering all of the care and strategic planning that are required. But behind the galleries at everyone’s favorite museums are a multitude of staffers maintaining and advancing the institution.

How does this internship relate to your career goals?

My time at the Whitney has solidified my interest in a career in art museums. From everything I have witnessed during my internship, it is art museums, specifically contemporary art museums, where significant resources and careful attention are being given to the kind of intentional and inclusive storytelling that I want to be a part of.
