BLSU Celebrates the Stories Untold

By Eva Jo McIlraith

The Black and Latine Student Union (BLSU) hosted the third event of Latine Heritage Month held on Wednesday, September 24 with a bustling kitchen and the universal language of food. The evening highlighted the food, music, and traditions of the people of Honduras, Guatemala, and Belize. The DMC was filled with students who came together to learn, taste, and honor the rich legacy of this Afro-Indigenous community.

The celebration offered more than just a culinary experience. Attendees sampled traditional Honduran dish Baledas, accompanied by Punta dance films and engaging conversations about the community’s unique history and contributions. The Garifuna, whose deep roots stretch along the Caribbean coasts of Central America, were recognized for their resilience, creativity, and cultural richness. “We wanted to share appreciation for a community that is often overlooked, and celebrate the stories untold,” shared Eboard Member Alexia Sayers to the gathering of around 30 attendees.

The evening ultimately reflected the heart of the Days-Massolo Multicultural Center’s mission: to amplify underrepresented voices and create inclusive spaces on campus. By celebrating the Garifuna people, the DMC and student organizers provided the community with an opportunity to gather in recognition of cultural heritage that deserves to be seen and honored. The event was a testament to the hard work of both the center and student leaders, leaving attendees with a deeper sense of connection, awareness, and appreciation.
