Are you following the Days-Massolo Center on Instagram? If not, you are missing out. Our social media lead, Raymond ‘24, and Social Media Intern, Chidera ‘24, both help organize, create, and manage the DMC’s Instagram page. These two seniors make sure everyone is up to date about what is happening at the DMC in real time.
Raymond and Chidera edit professional photographs into posts, take short videos and pictures during events to post then and there, and even create the occasional graphic! When I asked them what their favorite part about their job was, though, Raymond mentioned how his role gives him the opportunity to collaborate with so many different aspects of our DMC community. “I love that I get to work with different organizations and people to highlight DMC-related events,” Raymond wrote to me. For example, oftentimes Raymond will post or repost about the DMC cluster organizations to support their endeavors. Actions like this help to tie our DMC community together on an electronic level.
Chidera mentioned something similar when sharing her favorite part of her work. Chidera told me that she finds it rewarding “to showcase the meaningful work being done and create connections that foster a sense of community” through her role at the DMC. Chidera’s job boosts the connectivity of the people who are already in our community and it spreads awareness about our diversity, equity and inclusion work, which is fulfilling in and of itself. However, she also uses her role as a way to grab the attention of students who have never been to the DMC. Highlighting all of the DMC’s fun events and programs not only helps unite the members of our existing community, but it also helps welcome new people into our home away from home.
Chidera and Raymond also shared that their role in social media allows them to be creative in a way that some other campus jobs do not. Their work is not just about conveying welcoming and informative messages to our community, it’s also about how these messages perform visually. Raymond and Chidera are constantly thinking about how their posts can stand out to both the eyes and ears of their followers, which I find to be a unique aspect of working with social media. Other media, like newsletters or newspapers, rely less heavily on visuals and audios. People in those roles certainly don’t have to worry about trends!
“Using platforms like Canva to design graphics and convey messages in a visually appealing way adds an exciting dimension to the job,” Chidera shared with me. Specifically, Chidera designed the Cafecito graphic, which can be found on stickers littered throughout the DMC. Raymond also enjoys using Canva to design graphics for the DMC’s Instagram page, and some of his posts include circular logos for First-Generation students’ day and Black History Month. These days, social media platforms do not survive without good visuals, and Chidera and Raymond’s work does not disappoint.
As Chidera and Raymond both gear up to graduate from Hamilton, I wondered if they would take some of their role in social media at the DMC with them. Both had overwhelmingly positive things to say. “I so see myself pursuing a similar position in the future. My experience at the DMC has provided me with invaluable skills and insights that I believe will be highly beneficial in any social media role,” Chidera told me with vigor. Raymond was of similar mind when he told me that the DMC had given him a place to expand his communication skills. “Being in this role has helped me better collaborate with different groups and people to understand how to engage the audience in the DMC’s mission,” he explained.
Thank you to Raymond and Chidera for all of what you do for the Days-Massolo Center. We can’t wait to see what you do next! Make sure you follow the DMC at @hamiltondmc!
