BLSU Homecoming

By Lucy Mencimer

On Saturday, October 10th at 5pm, a circus came alive on Sadove Terrace. The Black and Latine Student Union’s annual Homecoming brought together the student body to celebrate with games, delicious food, and student performances.

BLSU’s Homecoming reflects over 100 years of tradition created by HBCU’s in the early 20th century. This version of Homecoming represents school pride and is an intensely cultural event, including music and dance performances.

Although Hamilton is not a HBCU, the event still reflected a celebration of the school's diverse campus.

As the event began, Vice President Regina Barnes and Secretary Briana Martin enthusiastically addressed the crowd and introduced themselves. Cheers erupted in the crowd as students began lining up to enter the event.

Each of the DMC’s organizations and other affiliated organizations such as South Asian Students Association and International Cultural Association, arrived two hours early to the event to transform the terrace by setting up tables with decorations, games, and treats. Most tables had carnival games like knockdown, or in the case of the Center for Intersectional Feminism, a mini replica of the sexual health vending machine, crafted by President Hailey Lanari, where students could win condoms and other prizes.

The Asian Student Union put together a  chopsticks game where contestants could win a mochi donut by moving dry beans from one plate to another with just chopsticks. Excited shouts could be heard across the terrace as students competed against each other for fun prizes.

Later in the evening, after students used their meal tickets to get delicious food from Ruby’s Colombia Cuisine or Lemonade from Squeezers, two of Hamilton’s acapella groups performed.

The first performance of the evening was Hamilton’s a capella group Tumbling After, followed up by The Buffers. Later in the evening, six members of HEAT, Hamilton’s hip-hop dance group gave an electric performance drawing all eyes as the sun set behind Sadove.

Hamilton’s twist on a traditional HBCU Homecoming created a space where students celebrated Hamilton’s diversity across all organizations thanks to the hard work of the DMC Ecosystem.
