Here on campus, the Black and Latine Student Union (BLSU) is more than just a student organization–it’s a community built on celebration, connection, and support. Ja’Riah Lamons ‘28; BLSU’s president, shared that the group’s mission is to “create a community for not only Black and Latine” students, “but also African, Caribbean, …” and other diasporic communities. For Lamons, BLSU is a place where students can “spread culture and create community,” while also finding space to vent about frustrations, take a step back and relax.” She describes the union as a hub for “fun and collaboration,” where students come together to share experiences, embrace identity, and remind one another that they “deserve to be here.”
Looking ahead to the new semester, Lamons hopes to welcome more of the Hamilton community into BLSU’s circle. “Making sure the wider community understands that BLSU isn’t just for Black and Latine students, but for everyone to join, come, and learn,” she said. With a calendar full of exciting events, including the annual BLSU Homecoming in October, a lively Welcome Back Bash and BBQ, pub night collaborations, and a series of Black History Month celebrations, there are plenty of opportunities for students to engage. To new and returning students alike, Lamons offers an uplifting reminder: “you deserve to be here! This is your campus as well–don’t let your identity stop you from trying new things and taking up space.” Through its events and welcoming spirit, BLSU continues to create a joyful, affirming space that uplifts students while bringing the wider campus community together.
