  • Jagdish Bhagwati, Senior Fellow in International Economics at the Maurice R. Greenberg Center for Geoeconomic Studies and professor of international economics at Columbia University, gave a lecture titled "In Defense of Globalization" in the College Chapel on March 1.  Bhagwati, an expert on international trade and immigration who has advised the WTO and the United Nations on globalization issues, discussed why he believes the negative effects of globalization have been exaggerated by its critics.  The lecture was part of the Levitt Public Affairs Center's series, "The Responsibilities of a Superpower."

  • Alan Krueger, the Bendheim Professor of Economics and Public Affairs and director of the Industrial Relations Section at Princeton University, spoke to a crowded Chapel on Feb. 13 on the topic “The Economics of Terrorism.” Krueger spoke about research he’s been involved with that looks at the economic dimensions of terrorism participation, and said that the oft-cited link between poverty and terrorism does not hold up under empirical study.

  • Edward Walker, Hamilton alumnus of the class of 1962 and former U.S. ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Israel gave a lecture on "The Changing Strategic Picture of the Middle East" on January 19. Walker talked about how the U.S. invasion of Iraq has changed the political situation in the Middle East, and what lessons we should take away from the war for future action in the region.
