Mackenzie Doherty ’18 has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Vietnam.

While most underclassmen left campus after their final exams, a group of 69 students stayed around to take part in Orientation Leader training. The students will be among those leading Adirondack (AA), Outreach (OA), and Exploration Adventure (XA) trips for members of the class of 2022 in August.

Seraphina Buckholtz ’20 has been awarded a Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship for study abroad this summer. She’ll study in Amman, Jordan, through the Council for Educational Travel, Intensive language and internship program. Buckholtz will study modern standard Arabic, and the Jordanian dialect and will intern with a refugee settlement.

In his address at Hamilton’s commencement, Ford Foundation President Darren Walker urged graduates to embrace history – good and bad – and lead the way forward with empathy, courage, and compassion.

“Eleni’s dedication to her friends and family, to the Hamilton community, to the refugees she worked with over the summer in Greece…. comes not from a place of ticking something off a list but from a place of passion and compassion. She is all in: heart and mind. How she does anything is how she does everything. I feel confident that Leni will take that way of being into the world and do big things.” - Amy James, director of community outreach.

Physical Plant custodian Heidi Griffith was honored with the Ellie Wertimer – Patsy Couper Award at the annual staff recognition lunch on May 14. The award is given annually to an employee who goes above and beyond in service to students.

Jacob (Jake) Colangelo ’20 and Cameron DiGiovanni ’20 have been awarded Coccia Foundation Scholarships for study abroad in Italy. They will use the $2,000 scholarships to study in Italy this summer at the CET Siena Program.

Academic achievement prizes, prize scholarships and other recognition of student accomplishments were announced at Hamilton’s 67th annual Class & Charter Day convocation on Monday, May 7, in the Chapel. Among the top prizes, Jenny Soonthornrangsan ’19 was awarded the Milton F. Fillius Jr. /Joseph Drown Prize Scholarship, and Marquis Palmer ’18 received the James Soper Merrill Prize.

Hamilton College’s Class & Charter Day celebration, an annual convocation recognizing student and faculty excellence during the preceding academic year, will take place on Monday, May 7, at 4:15 p.m., in the Chapel.

The annual Dean’s Exceptional Service Awards and Scholarly Achievement awards were awarded to Rob Hopkins, Karen Brewer, Tina Hall, Dan Chambliss, Sall Cockburn, John McEnroe, and Xavier Tubau.
