Kateri Boucher ’17 recently presented a research paper at the Association for the Sociology of Religion (ASR) conference in Seattle.  Her paper, ‘Too Smart to be Religious?’ Discreet Seeking Amidst Religious Stigma at an Elite College,” was published in Social Inclusion.

A 41-year tradition at Hamilton College continued on August 23 as members of the Class of 2020 lined up at Kirkland Cottage to sign the College Register as a symbol of matriculation at Hamilton. Kirkland Cottage has an even longer history, having been built in 1792.

President David Wippman will preside over the annual Convocation ceremony that officially opens Hamilton’s 205th year on Wednesday, Aug. 24, at 4:30 p.m., in Wellin Hall, Schambach Center.  An all-campus picnic will follow. The Convocation ceremony can be viewed live here.

Toni Burdick ’18 will study ing Senegal and in France in spring 2017. Deasia Hawkins ’18 will study in Germany for the 2016-17 academic year.

Margaret Gentry, interim vice president, academic affairs and dean of faculty, announced the appointment of new faculty for the 2016-17 academic year, including nine tenure-track appointments, 17 visiting professors and instructors, five lecturers and two teaching fellows.

Hamilton College welcomes the 475 members of its Class of 2020 on Tuesday, Aug. 16, for nine days of Orientation.  Twenty-three fall transfer students and 40 members of the Class of  ’20 who will start in January will also be on campus. Jake Blount ’17 just disproved the notion that practice makes perfect. Blount, a banjo player, put together an impromptu old-time string band, the Moose Whisperers, for a performance at the Appalachian String Band Festival (Clifftop) in West Virginia and took home first place.

Kateri Boucher ’17 has taken away two things from her internship this summer. One is that urban farms are more than just producers of foods, they’re an integral part of many communities.   And two, it’s possible to combine several interests in one pursuit. Boucher is conducting a Levitt Center-funded summer research project on that topic with advisor Associate Professor of Philosophy Katheryn Doran.

If there was ever an internship tailor made for a student, Sam Bernstein ’17 has found it. Bernstein is a veteran Hamilton Outing Club member and leader who is interning this summer at Zoar Outdoor in Western Massachusetts. Zoar is an outdoor recreation company that offers guided whitewater rafting trips, zipline canopy tours, and whitewater kayaking and canoeing instruction for everyone from beginners to advanced paddlers.
