President Joan Hinde Stewart presided over the annual Convocation ceremony that officially opened Hamilton’s 204th year on Wednesday, Aug. 26. New to this year's ceremony was a collective signing of the honor code card by the entire class of 2019.

Patrick Reynolds, vice president for academic affairs and dean of faculty, announced the appointment of new faculty for the 2015-16 academic year, including five tenure-track appointments, 24 visiting professors and instructors, and two teaching fellows. New tenure-track appointments are Catherine Beck, geosciences; Farah Dawood, chemistry; Cynthia Downs, biology; Quincy Newell, religious studies; and Javier Pereira, economics.

Sam Welch ’86 has been appointed director of Hamilton’s Career and Life Outcomes Center. A native of Upstate New York, Welch graduated from Hamilton with a bachelor’s degree in English and a minor in economics. Over 25 years he built a career in marketing, communications and advertising, acquiring extensive strategic and personnel leadership experience, and establishing a track record of building teams and understanding the needs of diverse stakeholders.

Hamilton's new student Orientation is taking a new track this year as all 475 members of the Class of 2019 participate in “Adventure Trips.” Previously, incoming students had the option of participating in a pre-orientation Adirondack Adventure or Outreach Adventure trip. Last year a new option, Exploration Adventure, was added.

Associate Professor of Theatre Mark Cryer and Kiana Sosa ’15 are off to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe to perform The Mountaintop, that debuted at Hamilton on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in January. Sosa and Cryer will be performing the show Aug. 8 through 22nd.

Dean of Faculty Patrick D. Reynolds announced the appointment of nine Hamilton faculty members to endowed chairs. All were effective July 1.

Six Hamilton faculty members were approved for tenure by the College’s Board of Trustees during a recent meeting. The board granted tenure to Emily Conover, economics, Andrew Dykstra, mathematics, John Eldevik, history, Nathan Goodale, anthropology, Adam Van Wynsberghe, chemistry, and Zhuoyi Wang, East Asian languages and literatures. The tenures are effective July 1. With the granting of tenure comes the title of associate professor.

Members of the Class of 1965 were feted and the 50th anniversary of the signing of Kirkland College’s charter was celebrated.
